I suggest using GM tubes. I see simple kits for $40 each
in the back of electronics magazines. You would only need
a single H.V. power supply for the array of tubes.

I read in a CLARIX manual that "CdS ... photoconductors's
sensitivity to steady light is ... equal to that of a
photomultipler".
Also, how does airport X-RAY machines work?
